On September 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay on the USS Missouri, Allied and Axis powers met to “conclude an agreement by which peace can be restored”. After General Douglas MacArthur’s introductory speech, people of the Empire of Japan were directed to come forward and sign the two copies of the Instrument of Surrender. General MacArthur then signed on behalf of all the Allied powers followed by the Allied nations in attendance. General MacArthur ended the ceremony by saying: “Let us pray that peace be now restored to the world, and that God will preserve it always. These proceeding are closed!” With those words, World War II ended.
And Now You Can Own a Part of History!
The USS Missouri resides at anchor in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, next to the USS Arizona Memorial, the two signaling the beginning and the end of World War II. The USS Missouri Memorial opened January 29, 1999 and may be one of the most popular attractions in Hawaii. Most everyone is deeply moved by the historic significance of this great ship. It was the last battleship ever built and the biggest. The USS Missouri is almost 900 feet long and over 100 feet in beam and more than 200 feet in height. Each link in the 1,200-foot long chains on the two anchors weighs over 100 pounds. 17 inches of solid steel protect the citadel from which the ship's operations were directed during battle.
