1920's Sears Mail Order Home
From 1908 to 1940, Sears delivered about 70,000 homes in through their mail Modern Homes program, with 370 designs that you might not recognize as a kit home. Sears home kits were delivered via boxcar and came with a 75-page manual. Each kit contained between 10,000 - 30,000 pieces with the framing members that were marked to help during construction.
This Sears bungalow in downtown Palatine built in 1920's still stands just like it did when first built. During a renovation, a 1940 phone book and a door plate from a coal burning furnace was found in a wall and now is on display with the home.
