A close cousin to the Irish Bog Oak, English Bog Oak comes from the bogs of the British Isles outside of Ireland. It is believed to be more than 5000 years old and has been dormant in peat and other bogs for all of that time. This timber is in remarkable condition and has colouring ranging from dark brown to black.  Like all oak, it is long open grained and can have some beautiful medular rays. The centuries-long process of timber change, often termed “maturation” results in colour alteration from golden-brown to completely black, and its hardness is increased to such a level that later it can only be carved with the use of specially grind and exceptionally firm tools.
